The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) representative in Yemen, Stephen Anderson, warned on Wednesday of targeting the port of Hodeidah in military operations.
“More than 80 percent of food and aid goes through the port of Hodeidah and it must not fall as a victim of war,” Andersson said in an exclusive interview on Wednesday.
“The situation will get worse if the port of Hodeidah, which feeds all of northern Yemen, is targeted,” Anderson confirmed.
“The number of people in need of aid since May of last year has risen to 3 million, along with previous numbers,” he continued.
“We are working on mobilizing the necessary resources to provide assistance to Yemenis,” Anderson stated. “A new emergency project has recently been announced to provide assistance to 9 million Yemenis at a cost of $ 1 billion and $ 200 million.”
“WFP’s emergency project includes food-insecure people nationwide,” he said, stressing that the emergency project focuses primarily on “preventing famine in Yemen.”
At least 10,000 people have been killed and more than 3 million displaced in the war against Yemen, supported by US, now in its third year. Millions of people are also struggling to feed themselves.
