The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said in a statement that it is strengthening its operations and doubling its budget this year to reach $90 million, with 70 per cent of Yemen’s population in need of one form or another of humanitarian assistance.

“The humanitarian situation in Yemen is rapidly deteriorating, and intensive international efforts must be made to alleviate the suffering,” said Robert Mardini, director of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for the Middle East.

“The needs are many, the time is short and the specter of famine is hovering over the country and the civilians are paying the price,” he said.

He stressed the need to lift the embargo imposed on Yemen, which highly depends on imports, confirming the need to allow goods and medicines to enter Yemen and be transported within the country.

The Red Cross pointed out that there are people who struggle and die from chronic and non-chronic diseases, calling for lifting the ongoing sea, air and land siege, which would significantly alleviate the suffering of the almost 30 million Yemenis.
