The General Commission for the Conservation of Historic Cities (UNESCO) called on UNESCO to save and protect Socotra Archipelago from the continuous illegal fishing of enormous amounts.

Despite that the alien-looking Socotra island being registered as a natural reserve on the list of the world’s vital marine sites in 2008, the UAE keeps the reckless activities going for its own interests.

The island is currently under the control of the UAE forces after it leased it from the ousted Saudi-backed Yemeni president, Hadi.

According to the Gulf Initiative that contributed to Hadi’s presidency after the 2011 Arab Spring, Hadi is legally no longer president as his period rule is limited for two years only.

Therefore, the Yemeni Ansar Allah revolutionaries lawfully ousted an already invalid president, inciting the Saudi-led coalition to return the so-called “legitimacy” of the illegal and ousted Saudi-backed president Hadi.

“Since the arrival of the UAE forces to Socotra, it has been subjected to continuous dredging of fish from its coasts; their marine wealth, and the smuggling of their rare birds and plants, which are among the world’s most underpopulated,” the agency said in a memorandum of protest to UNESCO.

The commission explained that the tampering of the United Arab Emirates with the territory of the archipelago through the construction that does not take into account the privacy of the island and its potential investment is characterized. The commission threatens that the UAE can result in the imbalance of the outstanding biodiversity the island has maintained for millions of years.

To conclude, it also called upon UNESCO to fulfill its responsibilities under the laws, regulations and executive mechanisms of the Organization to protect this international humanitarian heritage from vanishing.
