Four officers from the Russian Special Operation Forces were given medals by the Russian President named Vladimir Putin for displaying extraordinary bravery in fighting Daesh in Syria’s Palmyra.

The honored officers were part of a unit consisting of 16 highly-trained soldiers, which were tasked sensitive surveillance mission and responsible for collecting accurate information about the terrorists’ positions and movements.

The unit, however, was detected and fiercely attacked by the terror group. Four waves of attacks – carried out by 300 militants –  have been waged, which involved the use of Grad MLRS, VBIEDs and ATGMs.

On the other hand, the unit repelled the attacks and resulted in the killing of at least 30 Daesh terrorists.

The Russian military assisted the Syrian government forces retake control of the ancient city of Palmyra from Daesh twice; in March 2016 and 2017.
