Daesh is making its presence felt on the embattled Sinai Peninsula following a mixture of active alliances with desert tribes and favorable terrain have allowed the terrorist group to manage becoming more powerful than ever in Egypt.

On Tuesday, Daesh forces attacked many of government checkpoints south of Sheikh Zuweid town located in the northern part of Sinai province, bordering the Gaza Strip.

Led by a suicide bomber, Daesh units apparently overwhelmed the Egyptian garrison, leading  them to flee in anarchy, driving off in armored vehicles that were supposed to man the checkpoints.

Dozens of Egyptian government soldiers were killed in the unexpected attack, Amaq Agency said.

Daesh is mostly active mostly in the northern fringes of Sinai province and has set up checkpoints in the provincial capital, a northern port city named Arish.

Assassinations are also widespread in Arish while Daesh frequently raids army positions and entrant tribes, capturing their weaponry and military vehicles across the enormous Sinai desert.

Egypt is currently in a state of emergency because of the ongoing operations carried out by Daesh rebels.
