A report by Human Rights Watch revealed that 90,000 Palestinians in East Jerusalem live in houses without permits and are threatened with demolition. The Israeli occupation refuses to grant them building permits.
The organization said in a report on the demolition of Palestinian homes in Jerusalem that the occupation has allocated them only 12% of the land area for the construction of Palestinian housing, while in return 35% of the city’s land allocated for the construction of settlements.
It pointed out that the documents of the plans of the municipality of the occupation in Jerusalem seek that Palestinians should be a minority in the city, indicating that the citizen Ashraf Fawakah, who was in the medical examination of his daughter Aya, a month old, received a phone call telling him that the Israeli occupation forces demolished his house, which he built 6 Years ago on his family’s land in Sur Baher.
According to the law of Israel, Ashraf and anyone whose house demolished must pay a fine and cover the cost of demolishing his house. According to the citizen Fawaka, it is woth that the amount will be around 150,000 shekels (about 42 thousand dollars).
According to the organization, the demolitions led to the displacement of 254 Palestinians, almost half of them children, and that the occupation forces demolished 9 buildings during the past year and continues to demolish this year.
The international law applicable to Jerusalem prohibits the occupation from destroying property ,except for reasons of military necessity. However, the occupation has violated this prohibition since its occupation of the Palestinian territories, including Jerusalem without accountability, and Palestinian families pay the price.
