The Radwan Division, a Hezbollah special forces formation made up of elite shock troops, is to be deployed to the embattled city of Daraa in order to back the strength of pro-government forces there.
The formation has participated in many major battles throughout Hezbollah’s involvement in the Syrian War and it has proven itself to be as daring in offense as it is stubborn in defense. The formation has access to mechanized equipment (including tanks and armoured personnel carriers) as well as its fire support assets are mostly self-propelled.
Although confirmation exists of the Radwan Division being sent to Daraa, the amount of troops the formation is bringing with it and the exact mission it will carry out once it arrives there remains anonymous. Indeed, the entire fate of the pro-government offensive to free the city of Daraa from rebel forces is now in question after the operation stopped – seemingly before even really starting – about two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, if pro-government forces plan to resume a major offensive action in Daraa then the Radwan Division will most likely be one of the spearhead formations of such an operation.
