National Campaign to Raise Awareness of Cholera Control Launched by Ministry of Health

The national campaign for environmental awareness and sanitation to control the cholera epidemic from house to house, will be started next Saturday in the capital Sana’a and all governorates of the Republic.

The campaign, carried out by the Ministry of Public Health and Population, represented by the National Center for Health Education and Information, cooperated  with WHO and UNICEF, aiming  to raise awareness about the cholera epidemic and how to prevent it, to motivate the community to make a positive contribution to its control and to raise awareness about environmental sanitation issues on it.

The campaign contains awareness of the distribution of protective materials to every home such as soap, saline and zinc, which are considered the first treatment to maintain the cholera patients’ lives , in addition to the assessment, survey and identification of all water sources in the high risk directorates of 98 directorates to take the necessary procedures and treatments for purification, sterilization by Technical team from the Ministry of Water and Environment.

The campaign is carried out by 71,000 health workers, teachers, volunteers and members of local councils in governorates, districts and executive offices. It is run by an administrative team in each of the concerned authorities in health, water, environment, media, education and local authorities.

Six thousand and 660 religious leaders from all districts are taking part in awareness raising and mobilizing popular efforts and citizens to contribute to combating the epidemic and perserving the cleanliness of districts and villages.

The symptoms of the disease are severe sudden watery diarrhea, severe vomiting with persistent diarrhea, loss of large amounts of body fluids, short-term dehydration, severe thirst, severe drowsiness, insomnia and fatigue. The patient may plain of painful contractions in the extremities or abdomen or chest.

The Cholera prevention’s means are washing hands with soap and water, drinking clean and sterilized water, removing stagnant pools and cleaning tanks and containers for keeping water in homes and facilities, using detergents regularly and covering them tightly to protect them from contamination and transport.
