Initial Scenes from the Iraqi Military’s Tal Afar Attack

Iraqi forces started an operation to free the north-western city of Tal Afar, Sunday, from the self-proclaimed “Daesh”  (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL), backed by Saudi Arabia, who have been under control of the city since 2014.

US troops have reportedly set up a military base just outside the city to help Iraqi troops in the battle.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared the launch of the ground attack to recaptureTal Afar in a televised address on Saturday.

Over  100,000 people are expected to leave the besieged city in light of the military operation.
