The International Organization for Migration (IOM) called on Monday for the opening of Sana’a International Airport to facilitate humanitarian access to Yemen.
The Director-General of the organization, William Lacy Swing, who is currently in the capital Sana’a, called for humanitarian workers to be granted more access by reopening the airport to provide basic assistance.
In a statement, the UN official warned of a major humanitarian crisis in Yemen following the spread of famine and the spread of cholera in the country. The Yemeni authorities are called upon to allow immediate expansion of humanitarian access to save lives.
Despite the emergence of signs of a return to normal life in Sana’a, which alleviates the deep crisis, “80 per cent of the country’s population is still in desperate need of aid as a result of years of armed conflict,” he said.
The Director-General of the International Organization for Migration, William Lacy Swing, met today in Sana’a the head of the government of rescue Abdul Aziz bin Habtoor and Speaker of the House of Representatives.
It is noteworthy that the Saudi-led coalition has been imposing an air blockade, thereby enforcing the closure of air traffic at Sana’a International Airport fully since 9 August 2016 in a move to strangle the Yemeni people besieged since the beginning of the Saudi war on Yemen on 26 March, 2015.
