Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lokoc said on Saturday that ending the crisis in Yemen requires an immediate political solution.

“I came to Yemen to understand more comprehensively the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in the country, including the fastest outbreak of the world’s largest-cholera epidemic, the world’s greatest food insecurity crisis, and the widespread displacement of the population,” Lokoc told a news conference on Thursday. “He said.

“Everywhere I visited in Yemen, I saw destruction in roads, bridges, factories, hotels, houses, and others, behind them the shelling and the fighting. I visited hospitals where there was hardly electricity or water, and I also met children suffering from acute malnutrition, .

“I also met some of the 2 million displaced people who had to leave their homes to avoid the fighting and the terrible conditions many of them had to live in. I met health workers who had not been paid a year ago. I heard the stories of children who had not gone to school for a year Almost because of unpaid salaries of their teachers. ”

The official pointed out that he had frank discussions with the authorities in Sana’a and Aden on the need for all concerned parties to do more to ensure the arrival of humanitarian assistance to all who need.

Among the many issues he discussed, Lokoc asked the prime minister to ensure progress in paying health workers, teachers and other civil servants, reopening Sanaa airport for commercial and humanitarian flights, and improving the operation of ports, especially the port of Hodeidah.

“I reiterate my appeal to the United Nations General Assembly last September that all parties in Yemen, and the parties that support and influence it, should do more to ensure respect for international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians,” Lukok concluded.
