ISIS waged a counter-offensive in the western countryside of the Deir Ezzor Governorate, Monday, targeting the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) positions close to the Sukhnah-Deir Ezzor Highway.
ISIS started the offensive by attacking the Syrian Army’s positions south of Al-Shoula, forcing the latter to close the Sukhnah-Deir Ezzor Highway for a short period time this morning.
However, despite the intensity of the attack, ISIS was unable to break through the Syrian Army’s major line of defense near Al-Shoula.
According to a military report, the Syrian Army killed several terrorist combatants during the ISIS assault, including a number ofl foreigners.
The ISIS offensive was an attempt to mitigate the pressure imposed on their forces in southwest Deir Ezzor; however, it would ultimately fail after several hours of fighting.
