The threat of a senior Chinese diplomat to invade Taiwan as soon as any US warship visited the island is a war of words, with Taipei accusing Beijing of not understanding what democracy means.

China regards Taiwan as a renegade province and has never renounced the use of force to return the territory to its control.

The United States does not have diplomatic relations with Taiwan but is legally bound to help it defend itself and is the main source of its weapons.

Beijing usually describes Taiwan as the most sensitive and important issue between it and the United States, Reuters reported.

In September, the US Congress passed a fiscal year 2018 law authorizing the exchange of naval vessels’ visits between Taiwan and the United States.

On one occasion, diplomat Li Kixin said at the Chinese Embassy in Washington on Friday that he had told US officials that China would implement the anti-secession law,

Which allows it to use force on Taiwan if necessary to prevent the island from seceding if the United States sends ships of its navy to Taiwan.

“The day a US Navy ship arrives in Kaohsiung is the day when the PLA will unite Taiwan by military force,” Li was quoted as saying by the Chinese media at the weekend, referring to Taiwan’s main port.

The Taiwan Foreign Ministry said late on Saturday that although Chinese officials apparently want to try to win hearts and minds in Taiwan, they frequently use threats that hurt the feelings of the Taiwanese people.

“These methods show a lack of knowledge of the true meaning of the democratic system and the way in which the democratic society operates.”
