Yemen is now classified as the world’s worst humanitarian disaster and described by the UN as being “on the brink of famine”.

Yemen is listed as the worst-affected country facing potential famine, where more than 22 million people require food assistance.

The ongoing war and blockade are now creating a new threat to public health, as a suspected diphtheria outbreak takes hold. Half the suspected cases are children.

After three years of violence and a blockade on supplies including medicines and vaccines, the healthcare infrastructure is in tatters. The blockade on fuel has meant that patients cannot afford to travel to the very few health centers.

In addition, the cholera epidemic in Yemen has become the largest and fastest-spreading outbreak of the disease in modern history, with a million cases.

More than three years of aggression by the Saudi-led coalition has crippled the country, causing widespread internal displacement, the collapse of the public health system, and leaving millions on the brink of famine.

There’s no doubt this is a man-made crisis. Cholera and other diseases only rears its head when there’s a complete and total breakdown in sanitation. The United Nations, the International community and the aggression countries must take responsibility for the health emergency and the catastrophe we find ourselves in.
