Mark Lokoc, the United Nations humanitarian and relief coordinator, on Friday expressed his concern about a decline in commercial food imports through Yemen’s ports on the Red Sea. He pointed out that the inspections conducted by the coalition led by Saudi Arabia to the war on Yemen undermine the confidence of shipping companies.

He added that shipping companies’ confidence was weakened by delays, “including delays caused by inspections by the Saudi-led coalition After the United Nations verification and inspection mechanism authorized the passage of these vessels “as described. He pointed out that “the pressures on the currency and liquidity crisis in the Yemeni banking system limit the ability of traders to import.”

Instead of taking deterrent UN action against the US-Saudi aggression, Mark Lockock has only asked the Saudi-led coalition to ease restrictions on imports of food and fuel through Yemen’s commercial ports, warning that millions more could face famine. The US-Saudi aggression continues its arbitrary measures in preventing the arrival ships to the port of Hudaydah, ignoring the international pressures which call for the need to bring humanitarian aid to Yemen.

The port of Hudaydah is the only port and main artery of Yemen for more than 17 Yemeni provinces and more than 20 million Yemenis who depend on what comes from the port of Hudaydah of food, medicine and oil derivatives.

Local and international human rights organizations have warned of a humanitarian disaster against the Yemeni people, with the continued harassment and crackdown on Yemen’s maritime shipping since March 26, 2015 under US supervision and international complicity.
