PM appreciates national efforts, in partnership with humanitarian organizations, to combat cholera

Prime Minister Dr. Abdulaziz bin Habtoor  praised the humanitarian and developmental support provided by UNICEF to a number of service sectors including the Ministries of Water, Public Health to respond to the cholera epidemic.

This came during a visit by the Prime Minister to the Ministry of Water and Environment, where he met with the leadership of Ministry and Minister Eng. Nabil Al-Wazir, in the presence of the Mayor the Capital Sanaa Hamoud Obad, the Deputy Resident Representative of UNICEF, and a number of UNICEF staff and technical specialists in the Ministry of Water and Environment.

The meeting discussed the activities of the Ministry of Water and Environment in the area of ​​clean water supply to the population as well as preventive and awareness activities for the fight against the cholera epidemic.

Dr. Bin Habtoor praised the great national and humanitarian tasks being carried out by the national team and international organizations, especially the UNICEF, referring to their efforts made to combat the cholera epidemic,and to raise awareness on the prevention of the epidemic.

He stressed the importance of keeping collective work of the ministries of water, public health, media, endowments to spread the environmental and health culture, which helps citizens to be aware of prevention measures of epidemics.

“Thanks are due to friends in UNICEF as our partner in fighting this disease and all issues related to children,” he said.

In his turn, the Minister of Water and Environment has dealt with the most important tasks carried out by the ministry in the water and environment sectors, stressing that the ministry is working with all its capabilities in order to provide clean water free from diseases and to ensure the preservation of the environment.

He said that his ministry was preparing to open 17 wells running with use of Solar system before the holy month of Ramadan to enhance the water supply to the capital’s residents.

The Minister of Water and Environment pointed out that the Ministry, as part of its keenness to attend sustainable awareness of the preservation of the environment, has established an environmental awareness center.

He pointed out that environmental awareness has proved to be a key factor in combating the cholera epidemic.

The Deputy Resident Representative of UNICEF expressed the satisfaction of the Office of the Organization and all its staff in the partnership in the face of the epidemic, stressing the importance of focusing on the awareness in the fight against infectious diseases, including cholera.

“As a humanitarian body and organization, we thank the working group of the Ministry and UNICEF for carrying out preventive and awareness work related to the fight against cholera and work on a clean environment,” he said, expressing his confidence that preventive action would enhance the chances of success to combat the cholera.
