Health Ministry: 418 Thousand, 801 Cases Suspected of Cholera

The Ministry of Health announced on Monday that the number of suspected cases of cholera since January to June 21 was 418 thousand and 801 cases. 686 patients were dead in the capital, Hodeidah and Ibb.

The spokesman of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Youssef Al-Hadheri said in a statement to Saba agency that the cases affected by diseases and epidemics worsened dramatically in recent times, despite the efforts of the Ministry and its partners in response to these epidemics.

“Although there has been a marked improvement in controlling cholera, it remains a major threat,” he said.

Dr. Al-Hadhari describing the situation said that the measles cases are in serious danger, despite the noticeable improvement in the last month. He noted that there are about seven thousands of affected and suspiciously affected cases of measles since the beginning of this year.

He pointed out that there are hundreds of affected and killed cases of H1N1 infection, hemorrhagic fevers, diphtheria, malaria, dengue fever, acute pneumonia, meningitis, mumps, pertussis, liver, neonatal tetanus, chickenpox and Leishmaniasis, rabies, scabies and other diseases.

“The epidemiological situation in Yemen still requires many interventions and care at all levels, especially with the continuation of the aggression and the siege. The health situation every year is even worse than it was before, despite the great and continuous efforts of the Ministry of Health and the support of the partners in the organizations. However, all efforts cannot match the magnitude of the disaster.

He pointed out that malaria and dengue fever cases reached 3.5 percent of the rest of the other diseases, stressing that this is a large and influential percentage in light of the conditions of Yemen.

Respiratory diseases were reported to be 14.1 percent, while 10.9 percent are for diarrhea, including cholera.

A report issued by the Ministry of Public Health and Population confirmed that last year was disastrous for children in Yemen due to continued aggression and siege.

The Ministry of Health documented 203 thousand and 297 children were affected by malaria in Hodeidah, Hajja and Taiz, noting that a child dies every ten minutes because of malnutrition or other diseases, according to the United Nations report issued in September 2018.

The report of the Ministry of Health reveals that about a thousand and 203 children were infected with the Maltese fever, in Dhamar and other provinces. 981 children were infected with rabies also in Dhamar and Ibb with a large shortage of drugs for the disease.

The report pointed out that a thousand and 133 children are affected by Leishmaniasis, in Dhamar and Al-Jouf. Two thousand and 173 children are affected by schistosomiasis in Hajjah and Sa’ada. 330 children are affected by tuberculosis pulmonary disease, one-third of these case are in Aden.

The report also revealed that two million and 400 children under five years are affected by disease or several infectious diseases in 2018.
