Ali Akbar Velayati, an international adviser to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, cautioned Saudi Arabia that its involvement in the war on Yemen could lead to the same catastrophe that the US government experienced in Vietnam.

“Saudi Arabia should expect to see Yemen turn into another Vietnam for that country,” Velayati said in a speech at a pro-Palestine conference in Iran’s northeastern city of Mashhad on Thursday.

He also said that any Iranian help for Yemen is in line with its humanitarian duties.

Velayati further pointed to the Syrian developments, underlining that the US government will definitely fail to break up Syria just as it ended up in failure in similar attempts in Iraq.

In comments last month, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei called on the Islamic community to pay special attention to the ongoing developments in Muslim states, particularly in Palestine, Yemen and Bahrain.

The people of Yemen have been under massive attacks by the Saudi-led coalition for nearly three years. Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have been carrying out airstrikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

Over 14,000 Yemenis, including thousands of women and children, have lost their lives in the deadly military campaign.
