The battlefield in southern Yemen has been expanding since early August, as Saudi-backed pro-government forces and UAE-backed separatist forces, main parts of the Saudi-led coalition, backed by the US, compete for control in the region.
Today, clashes renewed in the occupied city of Aden between the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council’s paid fighters and gunmen of the so-called popular resistance loyal to Saudi Arabia in Sheikh Othman district.
Earlier in the day, southern sources reported that the popular resistance paid fighters seized control of the security belt paid fighters’ headquarters, which is located in Sheikh Othman district in Aden province, after a fierce battle that lasted for hours, during which heavy weapons were used.
A UAE military plane has left Aden airport earlier on Tuesday with southern and Emirati political and military leaders on board, southern media sources in Aden reported.
The UAE plane, which arrived at Aden airport suddenly at dawn Tuesday, left the airport earlier in the day, with UAE officers and several Southern Transitional Council leaders on board, airport officials said.
Dozens of Saudi-backed resigned Hadi’s forces were arrested in an attack carried by the UAE-back separatist paid fighters on areas in Yemen’s southern province of Abyan, according to sources, adding that the separatist paid fighters attacked Hadi’s forces and took over Shaqrah city. The Hadi forces withdrew and moved towards Shabwah province after the fierce battle in the city.
A Saudi political writer and analyst, for his part, warned the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Sunday to stay away from all concerns in Yemen.
Saudi politician Suleiman al-Oqeliy, who is a close to the Saudi royal palace, said on Twitter: “We recommend that our dear brothers in Abu Dhabi to stay away from all that worries their older sister Saudi Arabia, especially in Yemeni space, which represents the Saudi national security.”
“If they are unable to control the movement of their local allies (in reference to STC), leaving the field represents the best service to Saudi-UAE relations,” he added, referring to the UAE’s exemption from its participation in the coalition.
The exiled Hadi’s government has accused the UAE of supporting the rebellion against it in the southern provinces, claiming that was its role in the war against Yemen.
In March 2015, the US -backed –Saudi-led coalition started a war against Yemen with the declared aim of crushing the Houthi Ansarullah movement, who had taken over from the staunch Riyadh ally and fugitive former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, while also seeking to secure the Saudi border with its southern neighbor. Three years and over 600,000 dead and injured Yemeni people and prevented the patients from travelling abroad for treatment and blocked the entry of medicine into the war-torn country, the war has yielded little to that effect.
Despite the coalition claims that it is bombing the positions of the Ansarullah fighters, Saudi bombers are flattening residential areas and civilian infrastructures.
More than 2,200 others have died of cholera, and the crisis has triggered what the United Nations has described as the world’s worst humanitarian disaster.
