The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has reportedly committed illegal practices on the Yemeni island of Socotra in the Arabian Sea as divisions grow in the Saudi-led coalition waging war on Yemen over Abu Dhabi’s military build-up on the strategic island.
Elizabeth Kendall, a senior researcher at Oxford University in the UK, said that the UAE has crossed its borders on the Yemeni island of Socotra.
In remarks to the Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism (ARIJ) network, she said that the UAE has sent dozens of its soldiers as well as military equipment to show its presence in the region.
She noted that this was so clear that it was rejected by the Yemeni people and the “Hadi government” that called on them into the Yemen war.
Yemeni activists have circulated on social media websites pictures and video footage showing the rare and perennial trees of Socotra Island in Abu Dhabi, confirming previous reports that the UAE forces stole these trees during its occupation of the island.
A widely-circulated video shows an Emirati man boasting one of these rare trees after he placed it at the entrance of his house for decoration, confirming that it originated in Socotra Island, Yemen.
In early 2018, the UAE stole the rare and perennial trees from the Yemeni island of Socotra, in addition to large quantities of coral reef stones, rare birds and more others.
Media sources revealed that the UAE’s Ruler on the island, Khalfan al-Mazrouei, is in the process of acquiring 150,000 square meters of land on the Dixam plateau, a protected area in the center of the Socotra island.
The U.S. website ” lobe log”, cited the governor of Hadi in Socotra Island saying that the UAE ruler on the island “has extended his control over 1, 150 square meters of land in the protected Plateau “Dixam” in the center of the archipelago.
The UAE-backed paid fighters have withdrawn from government offices and centers on Socotra Island after they had been under their control for some time. The paid fighters loyal to the UAE looted the government offices and confiscated security cars and furniture provided by the UAE for the island’s police administration.
In March 2015, the US -backed –Saudi-led coalition started a war against Yemen with the declared aim of crushing the Houthi Ansarullah movement, who had taken over from the staunch Riyadh ally and fugitive former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, while also seeking to secure the Saudi border with its southern neighbor. Three years and over 600,000 dead and injured Yemeni people and prevented the patients from travelling abroad for treatment and blocked the entry of medicine into the war-torn country, the war has yielded little to that effect.
Despite the coalition claims that it is bombing the positions of the Ansarullah fighters, Saudi bombers are flattening residential areas and civilian infrastructures.
More than 2,200 others have died of cholera, and the crisis has triggered what the United Nations has described as the world’s worst humanitarian disaster.
