The United Nations’ humanitarian chief, Stephen O’Brien, warned that Yemen is heading for total collapse and its people are facing war, famine and a cholera epidemic at a time when the world is watching.

“It is time to end the world’s largest food emergency and bring Yemen back to the path of survival,” O’Brien told AFP in a speech before the UN Security Council on Tuesday.

He pointed out that the crisis in Yemen is realistic and that Yemenis are paying the price as a result of being subjected to deprivation, disease and death while the world is watching.

He criticized the threats by the Saudi regime and its coalition to bomb the port of Hodeidah at a time when the Saudi Kingdom is heading for “complete social, economic and institutional breakdown.”

He also rebuked the Saudi regime and its followers for exposing the families of more than a million Yemenis to famine because of their salaries being suspended after they transferred the central bank to Saudi-controlled Aden.

Twenty-two international humanitarian and human rights organizations, including Save the Children, the International Rescue Committee and Oxfam, have cautioned of the hazards in the Yemeni situation.
